EAST TIMOR CHURCH ROLE 'DECISIVE 26/03/99 3:17:01; Catholic Weekly
The Catholic Church played a decisive role in the Australian Government's recent policy shift on East Timor, according to East Timorese activist Josť Ramos Horta.
Speaking at the Polding Lecture in Sydney, he said the 'courageous role' of the Church, the 'courage, integrity and generosity' of Cardinal Clancy and others, and the power of the people, were instrumental in the Government's turnaround.
He said: "If anyone has really persuaded Australia to change, I believe it has been the Catholic Church in Australia. Looking into the strong statements it has made, the tremendous commitment of priests and bishops and nuns must have shamed those in Canberra, who seem to have hearts of stone."
