Fighting has continued in Indonesia's Maluku Islands with at least 35 people dead in two days of fighting last weekend, according to a government spokesman.
"We have confirmed 35 deaths in the two days of fighting," said a military official in Jakarta. More than 300 people have been killed in fighting between majority Muslims and Christians in the former Portugese colonies that make of the Maluku province.
Catholic World News reports that gangs of Muslims and Christians have waged war against each other and innocent bystanders since the start of the year, displacing thousands of people from their homes and destroying hundreds of Christian and Muslim houses of worship. The military spokesman said additional soldiers were being rushed to the region to augment the thousands who are already in place to stop the violence.
