The Australian Catholic Bishops' Committee for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations has met with leaders of the Australian Jewish community to discuss common concerns including the secularisation of Australian society.
Committee member Archbishop John Bathersby told The Catholic Leader: "It is a phenomenon both our communities view with some alarm as a threat to our respective traditions."
"At its best, secularisation can be a purifying force that clears away centuries old accretions that sometimes cover the essential message of religion and confuse those who seek light and truth. At its worst, however, it destroys not only unnecessary accretions, but the very essence of the message itself, namely the existence of God, that is the foundation of our Jewish and Christian faiths," he said.
