National BISHOP WARNS SEX ABUSE STRATEGY MUST BE UNIFIED

Individual Catholic dioceses and religious institutes tackling sexual abuse must surrender some of their autonomy for the sake of the common good, according to Chairman of the Church's National Committee for Professional Standards Bishop Geoffrey Robinson. The Committee is responsible for the policy document "Towards Healing".
Speaking in Brisbane, Bishop Robinson said: "Unfortunately Towards Healing has not always been followed. A number of Church authorities have felt free to dispense themselves from many provisions of the document. I remain convinced that as long as the Australian response consists of some 200 different responses, it will never be satisfactory."
He said the policy document had served the community well where its provisions had been 'faithfully followed'. "Many victims of abuse have been satisfied that their complaint has been listened to with fairness and compassion, investigated professionally and resolved in a just and reasonable manner," he said.
