NSW 'UNSAVOURY INCIDENT' TURN-OFF FOR PARISHIONERS

The Bishop of Maitland NSW has expressed regret that an "unsavoury incident" had turned people away from the parish and the Catholic Church.
A public dispute erupted at St Paul's, Rutherford between primary school principal Mr Michael Stanwell and parish priest Fr David O'Hearn after disagreement over school expansion plans.
Mr Stanwell is alleged to have physically assaulted Fr O'Hearn in the sacristy. Fr O'Hearn later took out an apprehended violence order against the principal. Mr Stanwell has been sacked by the Catholic Education Office, and last Sunday Fr O'Hearn announced his resignation from the parish.
Bishop Malone said: "I think because it involved two very prominent people in the parish then naturally everyone was affected and everyone took sides."
