Priest killed in militant kidnap bid
A Filipino priest has been shot dead in a botched kidnapping by suspected Islamic militants.
Reuters reports Fr Jesus Reynaldo Roda, a parish priest on the remote and heavily Muslim populated island of Tawi-Tawi in the southern Philippines, was gunned down after resisting capture by the suspected Abu Sayyaf militants.
Fr Roda, 53, was the third missionary killed in the region since 1997.
The hooded men also took away a local teacher.
The police chief on Tawi-Tawi island blamed Abu Sayyaf for the attack saying the missionary had been receiving kidnap threats from the group but had refused
offers of police protection.
Senior Superintendent Wyneright Taup added Fr Roda had vowed never to be taken alive by the militants.
