Canberra bishop highlights China human rights violations
Bishop Pat Power has said that in the lead-up to next year's Beijing Olympics, China must appreciate that its human rights violations are being noticed overseas.
Bishop Power (pictured), who was speaking at the arrival of the International Relay of Human Rights torch at the Chinese Embassy said the violations contravene the Olympic spirit.
"The Olympic spirit is about tolerance," Bishop Power said.
"It's about different nations coming together respecting differences and so on and that's certainly something that's not happening in China at the moment," he said.
The relay, which started in Athens in August, is aiming to draw attention to abuses of freedom in China ahead of the 2008 Beijing Games.
