Death Penalty paper for launch at Scott Rush parish
A discussion paper titled Confronting the Death Penalty: People, politics and principle will be launched next week in the parish of the parents of Bali 9 death row inmate Scott Rush.
The paper in the latest published in the Catholic Social Justice Series of the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council. It consists of four essays by authoritative writers on the moral, legal and personal aspects of the death penalty.
The paper follows on from the publication in 2000 by Dr Michael Costigan (pictured), The Death Penalty: Why Catholics should oppose it and develops the topic in the light of the attacks of 9 September 2001, the "war on terror" and the moral and political problems which erupt due to capital punishment.
In the paper, Dr Costigan examines the moral and historical dimensions of the death penalty, relating it to Catholic social teaching and the history of the debate around capital punishment.
Fr Peter Norden SJ, who was parish priest to Van Tuong Nguyen - the young Australian executed in Singapore in 2005 - and Brian Deegan - whose son Josh was killed in the Bali bombing in 2002 - describes his conflict as he wrestles to reconcile grief and anger with justice and mercy.
Prof Andrew Byrnes examines the legal implications of the death penalty in Australia and overseas, including the attitudes of Australian police, governments and political parties.
The paper will be launched on Thursday next week at the Corinda-Graceville Parish in Brisbane.
