Christian Brothers hand education to new body

The Christian Brothers have taken a further step in making social justice the primary focus of their mission, with the handing of formal responsibility for their education mission to Edmund Rice Education Australia.

Pathways reports that 40 Christian Brother delegates from Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand met in their new headquarters in Brisbane recently under the new Oceania Province banner to discuss their future.

Among the issues raised was the identity of a Christian Brother and exploring the attractions of the vocation for new members and the increase of professed Brothers in developing countries.

Exploring new formations of communities, the delegates discussed the growing work of the Christian Brothers in conjunction with the Edmund Rice Network, especially the outreach to indigenous and neighbouring cultures.

Organiser of the gathering Br Bob Wallace CFC said the enthusiasm for the new Province and social justice mission was invigorating.

"We all see this as a chance to energise our lives as we take on a new direction and bring members of the Edmund Rice Network along on the journey with us," Br Wallace said.
