Vatican delegation at climate change conference
The Vatican's delegation to this week's United Nations climate change conference is largely composed of Church officials and experts from East Asia.
Led by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, apostolic nuncio to Indonesia, Zenit reports a communique stated the Holy See is usually represented at such meetings by a delegation made up of experts.
"This way, we can take advantage of local resources and achieve a broader and more differentiated vision of the questions being examined," Archbishop Girelli said.
More than 180 countries are meeting in Bali to draft a climate change framework that will succeed the Kyoto Protocol, the treaty on reducing greenhouse gas emissions that expires in 2012.
Other members of the Holy See delegation include Msgr Andrew Thanya-anan Vissanu, nunciature counsellor in Jakarta, and three local experts from the Philippines and Indonesia.
