Parish priest supports bid to save Scott Rush
Fr Tim Harris of Corinda-Graceville Parish in Brisbane has joined parishioners Lee and Christine Rush, in a bid to save their drug smuggler son Scott and fellow parishioner Michael Czugaj from the firing squad in Indonesia.
Fr Harris said he was in regular contact with the Rush and Czugaj families. He said the parents were in "reasonable shape" despite the recent news that an appeal to save their son was lost.
"They know Scott did a terrible wrong. They are not asking for him to walk away from everything," Fr Harris said.
"They are asking for Scott's life to be saved and to serve his sentence in Australia."
The father of the convicted drug mule told The Catholic Leader his son had difficulty understanding the news of the Indonesian court decision ruling on the appeal which challenged the Indonesia's Constitutional Court ruling on the death penalty.
It was thrown out as foreigners don't have the right to challenge Indonesia's laws.
The Rush family will wait for a judicial review of Scott's case in Indonesia and if that fails the only thing that can save him is if Australia's Prime Minister appeals to Indonesia for clemency.
