Bishop says people with disability 'not a burden'
In a statement for Monday's International Day of People of People with Disability, Bishop Max Davis has called for a change in thinking to counter the assumption that people with a disability are a burden.
Parishes across the country will mark the Day on Sunday.
This annual celebration recognises and promotes the gift of people with a disability within the body of Christ.
It is also recognised as an opportunity to instigate change in a society which views these people as a burden.
The day also coincides with the First Sunday of Advent
In preparation of the day, the Bishops' Commission for Pastoral Life has prepared a parish kit to help with the celebrations.
Bishops' Delegate for Disability Issues Bishop Max Davis said that to embrace the entire community as the living Body of Christ, every member of the community must be included, acknowledging their call, their gift and their presence.
"People living with disability, as the International Day of People with Disability reminds us, are no less members of the Body of Christ than anyone else," Bishop Davis wrote in the introduction to the parish kit.
"Obviously there are particular challenges to enabling their full participation in the life of the community. Some of these challenges are visible and many others not so clearly identified.
"Once we acknowledge these challenges we can work together to ensure that all the gifts that flow through the Body of Christ can be shared by each member of that Body," he wrote.
