Pope prays wisdom will fuel mid-east peace

Pope Benedict has called on the world to pray for the Palestinians and Israelies to reach a "just and definitive" peace at the Annapolis peace conference.

The Pope said he prayed wisdom would help the warring sides reach a solution to the 60 years of conflict which has been "bloodying the Holy Land and caused so many tears and so much suffering among the two peoples", Reuters reports.

"I beseech God's Spirit to grant peace to this region so dear to us and give wisdom and courage to all participants in this important meeting," the Pope said.

The Vatican supports a Palestinian state and Israel's right to exist in security.

The conference starts on tomorrow in Annapolis, Maryland.
