Josephites plan for the future
Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart from Australia, New Zealand, Peru and Ireland gathered at St Joseph's Baulkham Hills on Sunday, October 14, for their 25th General Chapter.
Bishop Kevin Manning presided at the liturgy and prayed that the decisions the Chapter made in the service of the poor would be a "true enfleshing of the charism of Mary MacKillop in the 21st century."
During this year, the Sisters in their Provinces and regions, have taken part in conversations around the Chapter theme, "There is one thing that God asks of us; to act justly with love and tenderness, walking humbly with our God" (Micah 6:8).
Many Sisters, including Sister Jill Dance, the President of the Federation Josephites, Associates, Board members and others who share in Josephite ministries, joined with the Chapter members for the opening Eucharist.
The assembly commissioned the members to fulfill the tasks of the Chapter and blessed them. Significant symbols of Josephite commitment presented at the liturgy were later carried from the Chapel to the Chapter room where the deliberations are to take place.
Sister Katrina Brill, Congregational Leader, opened the Chapter and called members to remember that the original Josephite vision was of pioneering new ways of living the gospel.
"What might be the vision for responding to the misery and wretchedness in global times?"
"I encourage members to be mindful of all that has gone before, to have the will to forge ahead in faith, to be generous in putting their energies at the disposal of the common good, and to be prepared to start again and continue through both the highs and the lows.
"This is one way to encounter the Word of God becoming flesh among us in the Chapter event."
