Randwick to host WYD, Trainers Association confirms
Randwick Racecourse will host World Youth Day - an "inevitable" and disappointing outcome - Randwick Trainers Association has confirmed.
The Trainers Association's president Anthony Cummings said a telephone "hook-up" between all parties involved in hosting WYD confirmed the much jousted about decision to allow the event to take place at Randwick, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
"It seems all but inevitable it will now happen at Randwick, which is disappointing, but the Federal Government has become involved and is helping out with financial compensation for trainers, owners, etc," Cummings said.
Initially, WYD was estimated to cost around $12 million in relocation costs of the 700-odd horses, but this amount has skyrocketed to the amount of $50 million.
"We haven't seen the nuts and bolts yet, [but with] what we've been told, with a few tweaks, we could be happy.
"Until it is presented it is difficult to say."
Brazil wants next WYD
Meanwhile, Brazil, the world's largest Catholic country wants to host the church's 2011 World Youth Day, Brazilian church leaders have publicly announced.
Spain and England have also expressed their desire to host the event - which takes place every three years, Associated Press have reported.
National Conference of Brazilian Bishops Archbishop Geraldo Lyrio Rocha said Brazil put in its bid last May when Pope Benedict visited the country. He said the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte were likely venues.
Rocha said the 2011 host country will likely be announced in July in Australia, during the 2008 event
