WYD to bring a new Pentecost for Australia
Australia is in desperate need of a new Pentecost, Auxiliary bishop of Sydney Julian Porteous says, and World Youth Day is the perfect platform to make it come to fruition.
Bishop Porteous believes this was the intention of Pope Benedict in asking the faithful to focus on the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, The Catholic Weekly reported.
"Pope Benedict in his message for WYD encouraged us to reflect on the theme chosen for the event," Bishop Porteous said at a Mass to mark the visit of a delegation of the Pontifical Council for the Laity (PCL).
"The words taken from Acts 1, 8 are now very familiar to us, but does their meaning continue to stir our hearts and minds?" he said.
Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, and WYD co-ordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher also joined in celebrating the mass. Guests included PCL president, cardinal-designate Archbishop Stanislaw Rylko, and secretary Bishop Josef Clemens.
Bishop Porteous told the congregation that there were many signs to suggest that WYD will be a "wonderful event".
"But for those of us so closely involved in preparing for the event it is important that we regularly remind ourselves of what we are doing - what WYD is really about," he said.
"As Pope Benedict said on July 4 this year, 'WYD is much more than an event. It is a time of deep spiritual renewal, the fruits of which benefit the whole of society'".
"The Pope wants us to focus particularly on the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives and for WYD to be a 'New Pentecost' for Australia."
"This should be the prayer in our hearts daily as we work towards July next year."
