WYD Icon's outback walkabout

The World Youth Day Cross and Icon made a special Outback trek this week, visiting Alice Springs, Uluru and Coober Pedy.

The group of 50 young pilgrims - including 10 indigenous Australians - aged between 16 and 35 represented each state and territory in Australia.

The five-day journey saw the 3.8 metre Cross and accompanying Icon travel from Darwin overnight on The Ghan, before making their first stop in Alice Springs, Catholic Weekly reported.

The Aboriginal community of Santa Teresa/Ltyentye Apurte and Blatherskite Park were also visited during the trek.

Pilgrims also took the Cross and Icon to Ayers Rock Resort where a sunset service was celebrated.

A special service was also held in Coober Pedy's underground church.
