Bishop's tears halt Aussie mine exploration
A distressed local bishop convinced Philippine President Gloria Arroyo to halt exploration activities by the Australian owned Oxiana mining company.
The Inquirer reports that Bishop Ramon Villena approached the President and her Environment Minister no behalf of indigenous communities living in his diocese.
He was reported to be "in tears".
The next day, Environment Secretary Lito Atienza ordered the company to suspend exploration until environmental issues raised by the people are resolved.
Protestors were injured last week when their barricade was breached by heavy equipment.
