Stabbed priest prays for assailant's future

Sydney Divine Word missionary Fr Ho Tran, who was stabbed in the throat last month, has prayed for his attacker.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that he prayed that his attacker might become "a better person in the future".

He said: "I need to pray for the one who attacked me. I feel when I pray for him in the future he can be better - everyone wants to live in harmony."

55 year old Fr Tran was stabbed by an intruder when he investigated noises from a communal kitchen about 4.30am on 10 August.

The intruder - who has not been caught - fled. Police believe the man was interrupted while attempting to rob the mission.

Father Ho said today that he had resumed his ministry at the inner north west parish of Marsfield, two weeks ago.

He was badly injured in the stabbing, and it was only the quick thinking of the mission chef that saved his life.

Divine Word Missionaries operate in 58 countries. The Marsfield residence, where Fr Tran is rector, operates as a mission base and retirement facility.
