WYD prep "quarantine madness", Minister warns
Federal Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran has again warned that World Youth Day preparations at Randwick racecourse are "quarantine madness".
The Age reports that the NSW government should look at shifting the event.
But the state's premier Morris Iemma is not budging. He says Randwick Racecourse remains the best site for next July's event, despite the outbreak of equine flu.
Mr Iemma said WYD organisers had done their bit and amended their plans in order to minimise disruption to the horse trainers.
The government and organisers had examined a number of other venues for the papal visit, but Randwick remains the only viable option, Mr Iemma said.
The government and the Catholic church are still negotiating with the Australian Jockey Club to determine an adequate compensation package.
Meanwhile Sky News reported last night that permission has been withdrawn for WYD organisers to inspect the racecourse site. They will not have site access until late October at the earliest, with only eight months to go before the event.
