WYD at Randwick "square peg in round hole": McGauran
Federal Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran says that authorising workers to begin preparing the Randwick World Youth Day venue now may breach equine influenza quarantine protocols.
The West Australian reports the Minister has vowed to pursue the matter through the quarantine consultation forum.
He asked: "How can we let in lots of workmen to within a few hundred metres of stables given that the disease is airborne, it can be carried on the clothing or on the person of a human."
Racing officials and trainers have expressed disbelief that WYD workers would be granted permission to enter a quarantined zone.
Peter V'Landys, chief executive of Racing NSW, has repeatedly urged the state government to find an alternative venue for WYD.
Minister McGauran also revealed Prime Minister John Howard had been preparing to weigh into the WYD controversy.
He said: "World Youth Day at Randwick is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole and I was hoping that we would have time for the Prime Minister to consider the issue and to talk to Cardinal Pell."
"The AJC (Australian Jockey Club) gave me a briefing note ... the Prime Minister asked to see it and before we could act [NSW Premier] Morris Iemma's let contractors onto Randwick Racecourse."
