Gondola arrives at Vatican
Venice gondolier Vittorio Orio has finally arrived with his gondola at St Peter's Square to meet Pope Benedict.
This follows a 17 day trip down Italy's Grand Canal to Rome, and finally a truck ride to the Vatican.
Orio invited the Pope to Venice for a ride down the Grand Canal.
Three popes of the past century were patriarchs of Venice before being elected to the pontificate, including John Paul I, who died after only 33 days in office in 1978.
The 230km pilgrimage was undertaken to raise awareness and support for research on rare diseases, with the specific aim of helping children in Togo.
