Three parishes one priest, projections indicate

Organisers of an online petition calling for married clergy have said current trends point to the availability of only one priest for every three parishes.

Catholica Australia has published the comments of one of the petition organisers, author and former priest Dr Paul Collins.

He said the current recruitment rate provides for one priest for every 13,000 Catholics in Victoria. In NSW there will be only one priest per 22,000 faithful.

But Dr Collins provided some cause for optimism in his assessment that the majority of Australian prelates are "excellent, pastorally-minded bishops". He said they are determined to provide for the sacramental needs of the Australian Catholic community.
