Dead Melbourne priest a murder suspect
Victorian police yesterday confirmed that the late Melbourne priest, Fr Anthony Bongiorno, has emerged as a suspect in an unsolved 1980 murder case.
The Herald-Sun reports that Fr Bongiorno is one of several "persons of interest" in the killing of bookshop owner Maria James, 38, who died after being stabbed to death 68 times on 17 June, 1980.
Fr Bongiorno had also been charged but acquitted of seven charges of indecent assault on children.
DNA testing is expected to be used to either clear Fr Bongiorno or confirm the theory that he killed Mrs James whose bookshop was in Fr Bongiorno's Thornbury parish.
Police now believe that Mrs James may have confronted Father Bongiorno about his alleged pedophilia on the day she was stabbed to death.
Father Bongiorno died in 2002 at the age of 67.
