New Melbourne bishops ordained

Msgr Peter Elliott and Salesian Fr Timothy Costelloe were ordained on Friday at St Patrick's Cathedral as bishops for Melbourne's southern and northern regions.

News.com.au reports that Pope Benedict XVI announced the appointment of the bishops in Rome on 20 April.

Bishop Elliott was parish priest of Malvern East, episcopal vicar for religious education with the Archdiocese of Melbourne and director of John Paul II Institute for Marriage and the Family, Melbourne.

Bishop Costelloe has been Clifton Hill's parish priest, director of formation at the Salesian House of Studies, and was a Catholic Theological College lecturer.

Bishop Costelloe, who will work for the northern region, is the only bishop in Melbourne who is a member of a religious order.
