Vic Mercies take over Albury hospital
In an emotional ceremony, the Goulburn Mercy Sisters have handed over the running of Albury's Mercy Hospital to their Melbourne counterparts.
The Border Mail reports that the formal handover of the administration of Albury's Mercy Hospital and Marianella nursing home to Mercy Health and Aged Care Victoria last night was an emotional occasion for members of the Goulburn Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy.
Goulburn Mercy leader, Sr Marie Duffy, said the sisters were gifting to the Melbourne congregation the facilities and a history of service and care which was "our treasure".
"They represent a people whose faith and trust in the providence of the God of Mercy was unfailing," she said.
"A faith and love that brought to life their hopes and dreams for the wellbeing of the people of this region and the glory of God.
"Our prayer and our hope is that you will build upon our dreams and care for all our people so that through your works, the face of our merciful God will be known and loved."
Sr Marie offered the leader of the Melbourne congregation, Sr Kathleen Tierney, a candle in recognition of the handover.
She said the Goulburn Congregation sisters continued to face radical changes in their ministries and it was not without grief they had moved on from former roles, including the administration of the Albury facilities.
The Bishop of Wagga, Gerard Hanna, told those attending the celebration of the eucharist that the church had always understood health care as a central component of its mission.
However, he said the community should also not take for granted those committed to this care.
Sr Kathleen said she accepted the task and challenge for Mercy Health and Aged Care in taking over the administration of the facilities as well as the Mercy Care Centre and Mount St Joseph's Home in Young.
