Catholic activist accuses Qld police over investigation "farce"
A Brisbane peace activist and Catholic Worker stalwart whose arrest by Queensland police was deemed illegal by a Brisbane magistrate says that a police investigation of the circumstances of his arrest was a "farce from start to finish".
Writing in Brisbane's Westender, Jim Dowling says that he was assaulted by police eighteen months ago "for the crime of thinking about handing out leaflets at a public meeting".
"This week I finally received the briefest of letters from the Police department informing me that I was wrong in thinking the police had done anything wrong," he writes.
According to Mr Dowling, the assistant commissioner of police informed him that "enquiries revealed that the allegations subject of your complaint could not be substantiated".
"Therefore I do not propose to take any further action and I now consider the matter to be finalised," he wrote to Mr Dowling.
However, Mr Dowling says that "the process of complaining and 'investigation' has been a farce form start to finish".
"At no stage have I ever been interviewed or asked one single question about what happened by the police or anyone from the CMC (Crime and Misconduct Commission).
"The CMC duly informed me that they would pass my complaint on to the police who would investigate themselves via their own department set up for such things," Mr Dowling said.
"Next time I am arrested I will ask if someone from the Catholic Worker movement can take care of it!" he added ironically.
Mr Dowling, a seasoned Catholic peace activist, is currently fighting charges under the Defence Special Undertakings Act, which could see him and three other Christian activists jailed for up to seven years.
Mr Dowling, Donna Mulhearn, Adele Goldie and Bryan Law allegedly broke into the Pine Gap spy base, near Alice Springs, in 2005 and damaged fences, sensors and switches.
