JP2 audio cards in sales hit
A new Italian magazine has a hit on its hands with the runaway success of electronic audio cards bearing the image and voice of Pope John II while a dealer is auctioning on eBay a car that the late Pontiff rode during a 1979 US trip.
ANSA reports that the success of the audio card, which offers a blessing by the late pope at the push of a button, underlines the popularity of John Paul II.
Offered as a free gift with a new Catholic monthly, the palm-size device is comprised of a small picture of John Paul mounted on an electronic card which has his voice recorded on it digitally.
When pressure is applied, the user hears the pope's voice saying a blessing in Latin.
Some 35,000 of the John Paul cards have been snapped up from Italian newsstands in a few days and the publishers of the Benedicat Vos magazine say they are set to distribute as many again.
"I never imagined that our 'audiocard' would be such a success," said Nicola Sgarra of Efelia publishing.
Meanwhile, Catholic World News reports that a car in which Pope John Paul II rode during his 1979 apostolic visit to the US is now being offered for sale on the German-language eBay internet auction website.
The white 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car is being offered for sale by a German auto collector, who reports that he has maintained the 8-cylinder vehicle in its original condition.
Bidding in the auction which is scheduled to end on 22 January, have now reached 20,000 euros.
The car was donated to the Italian charitable agency Caritas after the papal trip.
Caritas sold the vehicle to an Italian business, using the proceeds to fund support for orphans in Cambodia. The title eventually passed to the current German owner.
