JPII to be credited with three miracles
Pope John Paul II's former secretary has revealed that the late pontiff seriously contemplated resigning because of ill health as news emerges that that three miracles credited to his intercession are on the verge of being accredited.
Times Online reports that the Holy See is close to making John Paul II a saint after its investigations.
John Paul had already been credited with curing a nun of Parkinson's disease and now it has emerged he has been credited with two other cures, the report says.
Rome diocese vicar, Cardinal Ruini is reported to have said he expected the checks performed by the local dioceses on all three miracles to be complete by April this year.
A formal announcement is expected on 2 April, the second anniversary of John Paul's death, and senior Vatican sources expect him to be declared a saint within 18 months.
In an interview by an Italian television agency Rome Reports, the Cardinal in charge of the overall process, Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, says that the diocesan phase of assessing the cure is almost complete.
The unnamed French nun was suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease when members of her convent prayed to Pope John Paul II to ask God for her recovery in May 2005.
Several hours after the prayers began, the nun said that she could write without difficulty and within two weeks she rose from her bed, reporting "no more pain, no rigidity".
Meanwhile, BBC reports that in a book, My Life with Karol, to be published next month, the late Pope's personal secretary, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz says that John Paul II seriously thought about resigning due to ill health in 2000, five years before he died.
Stanislaw Dziwisz said the Pope also contemplated changing Church law so that pontiffs would retire at 80.
The book also says that both the cardinal and the late pope were convinced that the former Soviet Union was behind the 1981 attempt on the John Paul II's life.
