Darwin Council calls in police over missing Vinnies gift allegations

Darwin Lord Mayor Peter Adamson has denied any wrongdoing after the council called in police to investigate claims that the mayor misused council money to buy a fridge that he says was gifted to the Vinnies.

Northern Territory's ABC News reports that the St Vincent de Paul Society says it did not receive the gifts, which also include $1,800 worth of gift vouchers.

The ABC says it understands the fridge was delivered to an apartment that was leased out by Mr Adamson's partner Leanne Meharry and signed for by the Lord Mayor.

Mr Adamson has made a statutory declaration that he gifted the items to Vinnies.

Acting Lord Mayor Gary Lambert says an emergency meeting of council tonight decided to call in the police.

"They'll investigate the irregularities and whether or not there's been a breach of the Local Government Act or any other relevant act," he said.

Mr Lambert said it is up to Mr Adamson if he wants to stand down, but the Lord Mayor denies any wrongdoing, the ABC says.
