Musos to compete for WYD theme song
World Youth Day organisers in Sydney have launched a competition for musicians and songwriters to write a theme song for the event which is now expected to attract up to 750,000 people for the final Mass with Benedict XVI.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the competition was launched at St Mary's Cathedral on Sunday by Archbishop Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity (PCL), the body that oversees World Youth Day preparations.
"The chance to write a vibrant and memorable song for the largest event Australia has ever seen is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Sydney organising committee co-ordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher said.
The song must incorporate the theme of World Youth Day 2008 - Jesus' final words on Earth: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses."
The winning song will be sung at the final World Youth Day Mass on 20 July 2008 by the crowd that some now expect to reach as high as 750,000 people.
The competition for a theme song closes on 30 November with the winner flown to Rome, where the song will be played publicly for the first time.
Archbishop Rylko is in Sydney this week with PCL secretary Bishop Josef Clemens and Dr Marcello Bedeschi, a PCL member and president of the Youth Church Hope Foundation of Rome.
The PCL will also visit some of Sydney's most famous sites, including the Sydney Opera House, Taronga Zoo, Sydney Olympic Park and the NSW Art Gallery.
They will also be hosted at different times by NSW Premier Morris Iemma and the Governor of NSW, Professor Marie Bashir, at Government House.
The site for the final Mass will be announced this Friday at the end of their Sydney visit.
