Memories of my visit to the heart


Little knowing how significant Pope John Paul II's 1986 visit to Alice Springs would be, I journeyed there with a number of other bishops for the occasion. Planted forever in our Australian psyche, his visit and speech will remain a significant event in the long struggle of Indigenous people for full recognition. Only in more recent years have I realised that my decision to go to Alice Springs, in my first year as a bishop, proved to be one of the great decisions of my life - Archbishop John Bathersby
