Charismatic Canadian bishop arrives to activate WYD school campaign
Canadian Bishop James Wingle has arrived in Australia for a nationwide tour to launch the Activ8 program to prepare young people for the World Youth Day in 2008.
The nationwide Activ8 program will be launched today for all Sydney Catholic secondary schools at a gathering of over 650 students at All Saints Catholic Boys College and All Saints Catholic Girls College in Liverpool in Sydney's west.
Bishop Wingle of St Catharine's diocese in Ontario, Canada, will join Sydney Bishop Julian Porteous in leading the ceremony inviting students to take part in the two-year educational program.
Students will also view a DVD presentation called "Get with the Spirit" to prepare for the upcoming WYD event.
Br Kelvin Canavan, Executive Director of Schools, says Activ8 is about sharing the World Youth Day experience with as many young Australians as possible and getting them ready for the largest Catholic youth event ever organised in Australia.
"We are delighted to have Bishop Wingle launch the Activ8 National Tours. He is an outstanding and engaging speaker with great knowledge to share with our students," he said.
Bishop Wingle, who has been actively involved in ministry to youth and vocations and was previously a member of the Canadian Episcopal Committee for World Youth Day Toronto 2002, will also visit other Australian cities.
