Adelaide Passionist gets international role
Well-known Adelaide priest, Fr Denis Travers, was elected Vicar General for the worldwide order of Passionist priests at the order's 45th General Chapter in Rome at the weekend.
The eldest of five children of the late Jim and Kath Travers, Fr Travers was born in Adelaide and educated at St Anthony's Primary School in Edwardstown and Christian Brothers College, Wakefield St, Adelaide, South Australia.
Fr Travers has previously served in various leadership positions in the Passionist Holy Spirit Province which includes Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea).
He was also Community Leader and Director of Retreat Centres at Holy Cross, Templestowe, Victoria and the Passionist Monastery at Glen Osmond, South Australia. He has also been at various times Novice Master and Parish Priest of St Paul of the Cross, Glen Osmond.
In 1995 Fr Travers was elected First Provincial Consultor and then in 1999 elected Provincial Superior, a leadership role he has held until the present time.
Since 2004, he has been a member of a three person Committee advising the Superior General on the restructuring of the Passionist Congregation throughout the world.
Other members of the Passionists' General Council include Frs Luis Alberto Cano, Luigi Vaninetti and Clemente Barron. They will work under Fr Ottaviano D'Egidio, who was re-elected the congregation's Superior General on 14 October.
Besides Fr Travers, Fr Philip Smith, Regional Vicar of Papua New Guinea, and Fr Christopher Monaghan from Melbourne's Endeavour Hills also represented the order's Holy Spirit Province at the Chapter.
