Family planning counsellors to get academic credit
The Broken Bay Institute in Sydney, in partnership with the Australian Council of Natural Family Planning, is today launching a new academic certification for natural family planning practitioners.
The new program will be officially launched at the Council's National Bi-annual Conference on the theme Nurture, Nature, Natural - Best Practice in Natural Fertility which begins today in Sydney.
"The Conference is a wonderful opportunity to gather with peers who are passionate about teaching natural family planning and educating people about the gift of fertility," said Noelle Melrose, president of the Council, which is described as the leading practitioner of the symto-thermal method of natural family planning.
During the opening session, Institute director Dr Gerard Goldman and moral theologian Fr Gerald Gleeson will officially launch the new academic awards of Certificate and Graduate Certificate of Theological Studies in Sexuality and Natural Family Planning.
The study programs will be offered through the Institute both in distance mode and in combination distance/face-to-face mode.
The Institute says that its new programs offer practitioners and students a theological foundation for an intellectual and practical engagement with the Church's teaching on sexuality, marriage and procreation.
"By placing the practical and physiological work of natural family planning within a framework of Catholic principles and ethics, helps us to understand that all components of the person - physical, social, intellectual and sexual - are sacred," Dr Goldman said.
He said the Institute is pleased to join in partnership with the Council to "broaden the appreciation of the Catholic view on sexuality, marriage and family planning in the contemporary context."
