Aussie sister joins Loreto international leadership team

Australian Sr Sandra Perrett will join the Rome-based Loreto international leadership team as another Australian, Sr Mary Wright, completes her eight-year term as Superior General of the congregation founded by Englishwoman, Mary Ward.

Sr Perrett will become one of four General Consultors for the congregation along with Canadian Carmen Diston, Irish Barbara Murphy and Beatrice Stuart from India.

Irish-born Sr Marian Moriarty, who was previously Superior General for the South African Loreto Sisters is the new General Superior for the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) Loreto worldwide team, Loreto Sisters News reports.

Sr Moriarty was appointed at the Sisters General Congregation which concludes next week in Lima, Peru.

She will be the first non-Australian Loreto Sister to lead the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary Loreto Sisters worldwide over twenty years.

Previously, two Australian Loreto Sisters held this important position - Sr Noni Mitchell for two terms from 1986-1998 and Sr Mary Wright from 1998-2006.

Sr Mary Wright, who will be returning to Australia after her eight years of service as General Superior, said, "I am sure Mary Ward will be rejoicing with us all in having such a leader to guide us among the complexities of the current church and world", referring to the founder of the IBVM.

Dr Elizabeth Hepburn, Principal Sancta Sophia College, University of Sydney, said, "The most important thing for us is that the General Superior should be a woman of prayer - possess that freedom to refer all to God as Mary Ward understood the nature of our calling. Sr Marian is such a woman."

Sixty-four delegates from Loreto provinces all over the world is gathering in Lima, Peru, to attend the General Congregation.

The General Congregation included delegates from Australia as well as two provinces and one region in the Americas, three provinces and one mission in Europe, three provinces and five missions in Africa/Indian Ocean and one province and two missions in Asia.
