Satanic verses daubed on Geelong Church
Vandals at the weekend smeared metre high satanic letters in excrement onto the walls of Nazareth Church in Geelong, but the parish priest Fr Greg Trythall says the vandalism was not the work of "serious satanic followers."
Geelong Info reports that last Saturday morning Fr Trythall found all but one of 14 large window panes and two sets of double glass doors at the church's entrance had been desecrated and excrement daubed on the walls.
Cleaner Brian West said the faeces had been spread to spell out metre high letters but that they did not make a word.
"It didn't make any sense," he said. "What got me was how they could have stood it."
It was the second attack on the Nazareth Church in less than two weeks after vandals used sugar on 28 July to spell out the message "Satan won't be defeated" and the letter Z.
According to Fr Trythall, the vandalism was not the work of serious satanic followers.
"I just believe that there are a few teenagers around with serious psychological problems," he told Geelong Info.
Mr West spent more than three hours cleaning the panes and getting rid of the smell in time for Sunday mass, just one week after doing a routine clean of all the church's windows.
