UK Cardinal launches ACU inter-religious dialogue centre

London's Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor will tomorrow officially open the Australian Catholic University's new Asia-Pacific Centre for Inter-religious Dialogue in Melbourne in company with the Honorary President of the Australian Intercultural Society, His Eminence Mehmet Ali Sengul.

The Centre (APCID), which aims to promote mutual tolerance between followers of all faiths, will be officially opened at St Patrick's Melbourne Campus of the Australian Catholic University (ACU).

Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan said that the launch of APCID is a significant milestone and an opportunity for members of all faiths across Australia and the Asia-Pacific to meet and develop cooperative links.

"APCID has been established with tangible aims to ensure it not only provides a forum for dialogue, but is also a vehicle that can foster real mutual understanding and respect."

The Professor said the establishment of the Centre is very timely.

"Recent events across the world continue to reflect the unrest and tension between followers of different faiths. ACU National is honoured to participate in this regional dialogue and play some part in tackling global unrest," he said.

Although this is just one step towards developing a more harmonious society, I am sure real achievements will be made given the major interest in this centre and the widespread support for harmonious relationships and productive partnerships developing throughout the international community," said Professor Sheehan.

As APCID develops, it will foster a close working relationship between organisations already working in this field, promote inter-religious research, host seminars and operate as a clearing house and resource centre for organisations such as schools, inter-faith commissions and State and Commonwealth Government departments.

In a sign of inter-religious cooperation, Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, who is Archbishop of Westminster will open the centre on 31 August with His Eminence Mehmet Ali Sengul, Honorary President, Australian Intercultural Society on behalf of His Excellency M. Fethullah Gülen.
