School students "nurses for a day" at ACU

Students from 33 NSW schools and colleges last week joined an Australian Catholic University "be a nurse for a day" program designed to give students a real flavour of university studies.

Over 65 Year 12 students took part in the day nursing lecturer Jennifer Evans says is designed " give students a real flavour of what it is like being a student nurse."

"Nursing is more than a job," she said. "It's a caring profession that can fulfil your life in a way that other careers can't. Through today's session, students have seen that nursing is a dynamic and challenging profession where new technology and medical advances constantly push career boundaries and challenges."

Participant Hannah Cole from St Joseph's Catholic College in Gosford said: "It's been a real eye opening experience for me. The realistic clinical lab session made it feel like I was working in an actual hospital. I've always known I want to work in a caring profession, but was initially nervous about studying nursing."

Meanwhile, Australian Catholic University's Gallery is hosting "Art From Inside," an exhibition of artwork by prison inmates, presented by Prison Fellowship International.

Inmates from correctional centres across Australia have completed the artworks. The exhibition showcases the winning artworks picked from exhibits in Queensland and Western Australia as well as 60 pieces of art from inmates based in NSW.

Ian Minnis, Executive Director at Prison Fellowship Australia, and his colleagues have been visiting correctional centres all over Australia to encourage the use of art as a form of expression.

He says that the exhibition provides a unique opportunity for visitors to reflect on the life of a prisoner and issues of justice. At the opening of the exhibition he said, "It's fascinating to see such emotion being displayed through art, particularly as these artists are often neglected by the wider society.

The exhibition is open from 8-22 July at Sydney's Strathfield Campus.
