Dorothy Day intercession to be sought on Respect Life Sunday

Intercessory prayer on Respect Life Sunday this weekend in the Archdiocese of Melbourne will seek favours from Dorothy Day, the modern saint best known for her work as a social activist with the US-based Catholic Worker movement.

The brochure produced by the Archdiocesan Respect Life Office points out the little known fact that Dorothy Day had an abortion as a young woman.

It speaks of her vision of her later second pregnancy as "a miracle from God because [she] thought he had left [her] barren after the abortion". She was later converted to the Catholic faith.

The late Cardinal John O'Connor of New York observed that Dorothy Day's life was a model for all in the third millennium, especially for women who have had or are considering abortions.

Respect Life Sunday aims to raise awareness and understanding of abortion. The brochure estimates that at least one in three women in Australia have already had an abortion experience or will have one, based on current rates.

The Office provides resources on its website (see link below). It also promotes the services of organisations such as Project Rachel, Open Doors, and Centacare Catholic Family Services.
