Tired but happy pope bids farewell to Poland

Benedict XVI has concluded his visit to Poland visibly fatigued but thankful for the Polish people's hospitality and faith.

Catholic World News reports that the Pope, visibly fatigued but obviously relaxed at the conclusion of his 4-day trip, gave his thanks to the Polish government, the local hierarchy, and the organisers of his trip.

Before departing Poland, Benedict XVI repeated the message that Pope John Paul had issued during his final visit in 2002 by encouraging the Polish people to guard their Christian heritage, and pass it along to other countries and to future generations.

At a departure ceremony before boarding his return flight to Rome on Sunday afternoon, the Pope told Polish President Leczynski that Poland will "enrich this continent and the whole world with her tradition."

He thanked the Polish people for their warm welcome and their prayerful support, asking them to continue praying for him. Citing the words of St Paul, he gave a final message: "Be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love."
