Archbishop welcomes Catechism Compendium

The President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Francis Carroll, today welcomed the publication of the Compendium of the Catechism.

Archbishop Carroll said the Compendium, published in Australia by St Pauls Publications in both hardcover and paperback editions, would be a wonderful companion to help Catholics gain the most from the Catechism.

"I commend this Compendiumto all Catholics and to all those interested in learning what the Catholic Church teaches and professes," he said.

The Compendium was commissioned by Pope John Paul II in order to realise more fully the Catechism's potential.

In 2003 he established a Commission under the presidency of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, to draft the document. In June 2005, the newly installed Pope Benedict XVI launched the Compendium which had been produced by his Commission, saying it was "a faithful and sure synthesis of the Catechism of the Catholic Church".

Archbishop Carroll said he felt sure the Compendium would become an indispensable companion for those in Australia who are seeking to learn about the Catholic faith.

"This Compendium speaks to us in a clear and concise way about the richness of our faith and should be especially valuable for catechists and RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) groups," he said.

The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church will be available for purchase in Australia from 3 April.
