ACU degree for Wiggles

The members of the popular children's band The Wiggles will tomorrow receive honorary doctorates from the Australian Catholic University at a Sydney ceremony.

The four band members - Anthony Field, Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt and Greg Page - will be awarded Doctor of the University (honoris causa) at a ceremony being held by the Australian Catholic University (ACU National) on Tuesday night.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan said the award will honour the Wiggle's "knowledge of early childhood education, the value of the preciousness of individuals and their keen interest in music and art to bring joy, humanity and great happiness to the young children of Australia, US, UK, China and New Zealand."

"They're really excited about it," said Paul Field, the band's manager. He said the band had received numerous awards for CD sales and business and export awards, not to mention being honoured by the City of New York, but this honour from an Australian university was a wonderful recognition for their work as educators.

"The guys have literally said this is one of the highlights of their 15 years of being together," said Field. "For an Australian university to award them for their education of children - it's a really great official acknowledgment.

"Of course they are entertainers No 1, but behind that is a real passion for educating children. This is a fantastic, formal way of acknowledging that," he added.

Three of the members of the Wiggles have early childhood degrees. The fourth member, Mr Fatt, is no doubt looking forward to the words "Wake up Doc" instead of "Wake Up Jeff" when he appears in the next Wiggles video.

But there's no word yet on whether the band members will want to be formally addressed as Dr Field, Dr Cook, Dr Page and Dr Fatt. "They have all been ribbing each other about it," said Field, with a laugh.

The ceremony to honour the Wiggles will be held tomorrow at Sydney Town Hall, but the audience is by invitation only. Apart from receiving the honorary doctorate with his bandmates, Mr Cook (the red Wiggle) will also deliver an address on behalf of the band.
