World remembers Pope John Paul II

The recital of the rosary in St Peter's Square, a special mass for the beatification of John Paul II in Poland, and an interfaith meeting in New Delhi are among the celebrations yesterday to mark John Paul II's death.

The recital of the rosary in St Peter's Square recalled the gathering and prayers that took place a year ago at the same place. Pope Benedict XVI yesterday led the Marian prayer for the former Pope who had the "Totus Tuus" on his coat of arms, dedicated to Mary.

The recital of the rosary yesterday evening, and mass today celebrated in St Peter's Square are two public events among many across the world to commemorated the death of the late Pontiff.

In Poland, at the hour of John Paul II's death, the historic Sigismund bell of Wawel Cathedral pealed. This is the same bell that rang out on the afternoon of 16 October 1978 to announce to the Poles that one of them had become pope.

Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, who was secretary to John Paul II, celebrated an anniversary mass in the Cathedral where Fr Karol Wojtyla, as John Paul II was then known, celebrated his first mass. Services also took place in Wadowice, the birth place of Fr Wojtyla.

A special mass for the beatification of John Paul II was celebrated in the Polish shrine of Lagiewniki, dedicated to the Divine Mercy. Fr Wojtyla had been especially attached to this place since his youth.

In Asia, defined by John Paul II as "our shared task for the third millennium", special initiatives were also planned to recall the deceased pope.

In Seoul, a photo exhibition and a film broadcast recalled the visits of John Paul II to the country in 1984 and 1989.

In New Delhi, an inter-faith meeting was held by human rights organisations to "gather people of different faiths and social strata" in memory of the late pope's voice, "the most important one in the defence of the weak".

There was a youth gathering in Manila to mark the World Youth Day there in 1995 that saw the participation of around four million people.

Across Australia yesterday, special masses were dedicated to Pope John Paul II's memory, who visited Australia three times in 1973, 1986 and 1995.
