Young Vinnies National Youth Week visit to remote community

Young Vinnies volunteers from across Australia have arrived in the Northern Territory to take part in a two-week immersion experience in a remote Indigenous community south west of Darwin.

A St Vincent de Paul Society statement said that the members will volunteer their services at the Nganmarriyanga (Palumpa) community. This program falls in National Youth Week 1-9 April.

"They will be immersing themselves in community life, running activities for the kids during the school holidays, helping out as teacher's aids in the school and building relationships with the locals," the statement said.

The Young Vinnies group, which includes members from the Northern Territory, Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia, flew to the community on Tuesday after spending the weekend in Darwin.

The statement said the initiative is about young Australians developing positive relationships with young people from the Nganmarriyanga Community. The experience offers the participants an opportunity to learn about Aboriginal culture and communities first hand.

National Youth Representative for the St Vincent de Paul Society, Teresa Wilson said, "Young Vinnies have a strong desire to listen, learn from and interact with the people of the Nganmarriyanga Community.

"We have a lot to learn from the traditional owners of our land. This will be a unique and challenging experience for those involved and one they are sure to never forget," she said.

The Nganmarriyanga School website describes the community as being 375km south west of Darwin: "Cross the Daly River at Daly, hit the dirt and keep going for another 142km."

The community is cut off during the wet season and access during this time is limited to air.
