"John Paul the Great" discount card for Catholic students

A free Catholic resource discount card, named in honour of John Paul II, will be available from July to all tertiary students, seminarians and graduates.

Daniel Hill, President of the Australian Catholic Students Association (ACSA), said the card honours the late pontiff's call for "a new evangelisation in Australia".

ACSA has established partnerships with Sydney Catholic Books and Resources, Ignatius House, Connorcourt Publishing and the Servants of Mary Help of Christians Marian Centre who have committed to a 20 per cent discount to cardholders.

According to the Catholic Weekly, a national database has been developed with each student issued a numbered card. This will also allow participating suppliers to email hundreds of Catholic students across the country with information and news particular to the supplier.

"We are very excited about this initiative and are proud to be working with Sydney Catholic Books and Resources who have a strong tradition of providing quality books, CDs, DVDs and other resources," said Mr Hill.

Mr Hill said the card is not restricted to Catholic students and is available all Australian students including students from secular universities.

"Students studying religion, theology, philosophy can even order their text books and attain the discount - a huge boost for students wanting to give themselves to the Church," he said.

Greg Morgan, a second-year seminarian at The Good Shepherd, Homebush, said the card will help in his "priestly formation and studies".

"Seminarians don't make a lot of money so this discount card is really a godsend," he said. "It's important for a priest to be well read and the card will make books more affordable."

James Foster of ACSA says the resource card is the "realisation and manifestation of a dream".

"With this card we assist greatly in an awakening of justice, education and evangelisation, that we may renew the Church in this new millennium," he said.

The card will be officially launched at an ACSA conference in Melbourne in July.
