Vatican health official toasts Jesuit winemaker

Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, who has been in South Australia for last week's World Day of the Sick, has visited the Jesuits' Sevenhill winery in the Clare Valley in the state's mid-north, to pay tribute to the work of Emeritus Winemaker, Br John May SJ.

The Northern Argus reports that Cardinal Barragan presented Br May with a special Vatican medal blessed by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in recognition of his work for the Catholic Church.

The medal, number 432 of only 6000 minted for presentation throughout the world, was issued by the Vatican City Secretariat of State to commemorate the first year of the pontificate of His Holiness Pope Benedict XV1.

The medal presentation occurred at the conclusion of a visit to the historic Jesuit winery by members of the Vatican delegation attending the 14th World Day of the Sick ceremonies in Adelaide.

Sevenhill Cellars has produced sacramental wine since 1848. It also produces an award-winning range of whites, reds and fortified wines. Channel 9's Today program also featured Sevenhill Cellars yesterday, when the program's weather presenter paid a promotional visit to present the weather forecast on location.

Br May escorted the Vatican delegation on a tour of the Sevenhill site, including the crypt, underground cellar and an opportunity to taste the wine. Delegates were presented with gifts of Sevenhill wine as mementos of their visit which included a European style lunch on the winery lawns where guests were served Sevenhill Riesling and Shiraz which earned many favourable comments.

Brother John, who has twice visited the Vatican, told the Argus that the celebration of Mass with the delegates was a special memory.

"I was given an opportunity to explain the history of the Jesuits in Sevenhill and the history of the winery which was well received," he said.
