Pell sets up office for Marriage and Family

The Archdiocese of Sydney has recently opened a new Marriage and Family Office at the Polding Centre in Liverpool St, Sydney.

"Promoting the truth, goodness and beauty of Marriage and Family" is the mandate of the new office, according to a statement released yesterday by Catholic Communications.

The Sydney Marriage and Family Office is headed by Mr Chris Meney who recently arrived in Sydney with his wife and eight of their nine children. He and his wife Mary-Clare, have recently moved to Sydney having previously lived in both rural and city locations in NSW, including Jervis Bay, as well as Victoria and overseas.

Meney has been involved with both Church and secular family organisations over many years. These include previous engagements with the Archdiocesan Council for Marriage and Family in Melbourne, the National Association of Catholic Families and the Australian Family Association.

He has had previous employment experience in biomedical science, the Navy and as a secondary school teacher in both State and Catholic sectors. Chris was the Head of Religious Education at an independent Catholic Boys school for six years. He has degrees in Applied Science and Education and has recently completed a second Masters degree in Bioethics at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family

A key focus of his work at the Marriage and Family office will be to project the Church's vision of marriage and family out into the culture. It will also look to establish links with parishes and other agencies who are working to support family life. This new office will help to explain and defend the Christian understanding of marriage and family both to the Church community and to the wider society.

"The truth about the beauty of marriage and family is something that we need to re-discover - to realise that faithful and enduring married love is worthwhile and achievable," he said. "We need to grasp the real grandeur of this most intimate and loving of relationships and the preciousness of its fruit - the gift of children".
