Women explore multi-faith society at ACU National lecture series

Top female academics, theologians and commentators will discuss the implications of living in a multifaith society at a series of public lectures being organised by Australian Catholic University and the Commission for Australian Catholic Women (CACW).

The series, People in dialogue: living in a multifaith society, will take place between February and May at ACU National's Canberra Campus (Signadou) in conjunction with the CACW's Young Catholic Women's Interfaith Fellowship Program.

An integral part of the Fellowship Program is a Graduate Certificate in Interfaith Relations course which has been developed by ACU National. The lecture series will run parallel to the course units namely, foundations of Christian faith, ecumenical and interfaith relations, Judaism and Islam, and socio-cultural analysis.

Therese Vassarotti, Executive Officer at the Commission for Australian Catholic Women, said "The Cronulla riots illustrated what can go wrong when a proper dialogue between faiths and cultures is not encouraged. This series of talks will explore the complex issues that surround our national and spiritual identities, in a bid to aid understanding and reconciliation."

Associate Professor Raymond Canning from ACU National's School of Theology in Canberra said, "In response to an invitation from the CACW, we developed the Graduate Certificate course to help promote dialogue between Australia's many faith communities, The series of public talks will enable us both to bring a broader public into the discussion and to model a process of engagement and dialogue which our students might draw upon in the future."

The first talk, which takes place on Monday, will be delivered by Eileen Glass from the L'Arche Community in Canberra.
