Priest comments after Melbourne gangland murder

East Brunswick priest Fr Victor Farrugia said early today he was saddened by last night's death of former lawyer Mario Condello, who sometimes attended Mass at his church.

The Herald-Sun reports that Melbourne's gangland war flared anew last night with the shooting of Condello at his Brighton home.

Police were called to Condello's suburban North Road home around 9.50pm yesterday. Witnesses reported hearing several shots fired.

Detectives from the Purana task force, set up in 2003 to investigate unsolved gangland killings, as well as homicide squad detectives, were at the scene early today and the area had been cordoned off.

Fr Farrugia said he had known the Condello family for some time and Mario came to his church occasionally.

"He started in particular when he came out of prison.

"I think he was searching. It certainly seemed that way," Fr Farrugia said.

"You know, we are all complicated beings."
